WILDLIFE SANCTUARIES AROUND DELHI

Hill stations are not the only escape from Delhi. Delhi is also a good center to cover some major wildlife destinations which offer amazing views of the flora and fauna. One can easily see exotic mammals like Tigers, Asiatic Elephants, One horned-rhinoceroses, Leopards, Hyenas, Gharials and River Dolphins. Here is a list of wildlife destinations near Delhi you can cover:

  1. Kaladeo Wildlife Sanctuary:

Located approximately 190 km from Delhi along the Yamuna expressway is a manmade and man managed wetland built by the Maharaja of Bharatpur in the colonial era. It is a 29 square km area and is home to an array of wildlife! Some of the fauna you will come across are the Tigers, Nilgai, feral cattlechital deer, and sambar! You’ll also run across Wild boars, Indian porcupines, and two different mongoose species – the small Indian mongoose and the common Indian gray mongoose! There 230 species of birds and 55 species of fishes too.

  1. Rajaji Tiger Reserve:

Located 260 kms from Delhi in the state of Uttarakhand, the Rajaji tiger reserve has been an important part of the ‘Save the Tiger’ mission of the Government of India. Covering an area of 820 square kms across 3 districts, it is the 2nd largest Tiger reserve in Uttarakhand after Jim Corbett National park. It is also home to an array of wildlife including Asian elephants, Leopards, Striped hyenas, Gorals, Sloth and Himalayan black bears! There are also a lot of reptiles like the majestic King cobras, monitor lizards and pythons.

  1. Sariska National Park:

The Sasrika National is located in the Alwar district of the state of Rajasthan. It is located around 200 kms from Delhi. It is an Indian National Park and Wild Refuge.

The Sasrika National Park initially was a hunting ground for the royal family in the 18th and 19th centuries. The park still hosts the ruins of medieval houses and temples dating back to the 10th an 11th centuries. The Sasrika National Park was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1958, and a Tiger Reserve Project in 1978.

The park is spread across a vast landmass consisting of deciduous forests, grasslands, rocky landscapes and steep falls. It is home to leopards, sambhar deer, hyenas, crocodiles, tigers and a number of other avian species and marsh animals.

  1. Chambal Wildlife Sanctuary:

The National Chambal Sanctuary was set up in 1979 as a riverine  sanctuary along an approximately 425 km length of the Chambal River and its ravines stretching  over 2-6 km wide along the river. National Chambal Sanctuary is the main area for the species reintroduction programmme of the crocodilian speciesGavialis gangeticus (Gharial).

Stretching for 400 kilometers, the transparent lake of National Chambal Sanctuary in UP also houses the Smooth Coated Otters. Within the sanctuary, the pristine Chambal River cuts through mazes of ravines and hills with many sandy beaches.
